Legal Proof Reader/Document Checker

Our client is a leading global law firm and we are seeking experienced individuals to join our team of proof readers / document checkers. The successful candidate will be used to working to deadlines and will have a flare for the English language.  They will need an eye for detail to check copy and transcripts ensuring there are no spelling, grammatical, formatting and typographical errors.

The purpose of this role is to provide a high standard of document checking, copy editing and proof-reading support in legal/marketing documents marked-up by lawyers or amended by Document Production Specialists using the department’s standardised marks on hard copy.

This post is office-based and a permanent position working 45 hours per week. Shifts vary from Monday to Friday and Wednesday to Sunday.

We are currently recruiting for a range of shifts including but not limited to:

  • 05:00 – 14:00 (Monday to Friday)
  • 00:00 – 09:00 (Monday-Friday)
  • 08:00 – 17:00 (Monday to Friday)

The successful applicant will have at least 12 months’ experience working as a copy editor, paralegal, lawyer or professional proofreader within a law firm or similar environment and have been educated to degree level in a relevant subject of law. Computer literacy and being able to multi-task with attention to detail are key requirements for this role.

Excellent communication skills are essential as client liaising will take place regarding job instructions and deadline management. Flexibility around working hours will be advantageous. Full systems training will be provided.

Document Technician / Specialist

The Document Production team are responsible for creating, editing and reformatting all client documents according to precedents, templates and House Style.  Responsibilities include the processing of copy, audio and scanned work, problem resolution for lengthy and complex documents and corrupt document repairs.

Document Production Technicians/Specialists must be proficient in problem-solving within the key applications: Word, PowerPoint and Excel.

This post is office-based and a permanent position working 45 hours per week.

Technical ability

  • Produce and amend lengthy and complex business-critical documents with speed and accuracy
  • Proof-read and check spelling, grammar, formatting, presentation and sense
  • Proficient in key software packages: Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Outlook

Administrative skills

  • Maintain and update statistics
  • Attend and contribute proactively to meetings

Professional skills

  • Proactive clarification of instructions from the client/supervisor and/or manager
  • Provide an effective and efficient handover of work between shifts

  • Established document production experience in a fast-paced professional services environment using templates and House Style
  • Excellent accuracy and attention to detail
  • Typing speed of at least 50 wpm and proficient in both audio and copy typing
  • Proficient user of Word, PowerPoint and Excel
  • Experience of using Visio, Adobe Writer, DocX Tools beneficial
  • Experience of working with scanned documents
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines
  • MOS Word Expert Qualification
