The Horizon scandal
No one who has read the stories of the former sub-postmasters who were falsely imprisoned as a result of the Horizon system faults can fail to feel immense sympathy for those involved. It’s been described as “the most widespread miscarriage of justice in UK history”.
The Horizon scandal resulted in more than 700 post office operators being prosecuted between 1999 and 2015 for theft, fraud and false accounting because of faulty software installed by the Post Office in the late 1990s.
Just this month, the government offered those whose convictions have now been overturned, increased compensation of £600,000. Given the devasting impact on individual lives, many will say this is still not enough.
Disclosure is difficult
The scandal is currently the subject of a statutory inquiry led by the retired high court judge Sir Wyn Williams, which is expected to be completed sometime in 2024.
Even at the inquiry there has recently been controversy as issues with the disclosure of documents by the Post Office have caused delays.
